Chinese Students Are Good At Math

The BBC reports that the Royal Society of Chemistry says Chinese kids are better at math than English kids. Racist bastards! Somebody at the Royal Society of Chemistry should get fired. I think we can do without hurtful racial stereotypes in this day and age. I don't see why a chemistry society is commenting on math anyway.

They're offering 500 pounds to someone who can answer a question from a Chinese university entrance exam, so sharpen your pencils. That's nearly 227 kilograms!

It turns out that they cut the American math test from their original story. Lucky for you, my sources at the BBC had access to the unedited version of the story. Here it is, in a Dead Spot exclusive:

I refuse to answer because I certainly don't need to carry around an extra 500 pounds, even if it's only 227 kilograms.

I went to the link provided, and your example is really funny. I live in Texas, and your doctored question could pass for a real one in my state (or Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana). The layity is quite dense in this area of the world.

The UK's Royal Society of Chemistry can be so bitchy sometimes.

Does the big shape have three sides or 5? If it has 5, I guess it's one of those penta-something shapes with 5 sides. Or is the little shape caught entirely inside the big shape?

This is SO UNFAIR! The questions shouldn't be this hard.

Hey, that's a racist stereotype...

It was funny, when I still lived with Karen, I'd have to do all the math-- she was terrible at it. It was the source of some humor in our household.

What was even funnier was me teaching the Chinese-American live-in girlfriend how to cook rice. She'd grown up in a restaurant-- she'd never had to cook it before.

Becks, I think we have a place for you in our Math for Poets class.

But 227 is only, like, a third of 500, Flan.

The scary thing is that our social studies guidelines are, if anything, even weaker than our math guidelines. Not everybody is going to become a mathemetician, but everybody should vote.

I know, Vikki. Ever since they became Royal, they think they're so much better than the rest of us.

If it helps, CP, the back of the book says that the answer is "Whitesnake". I'm sure you can work backwards from there.

That's what I said, Johnny!

I'm going to have to teach Zoe how to cook at some point. I keep telling her that she won't be able to survive on mac and cheese and frozen pizza, but I'm not sure she believes me.

You should check with Chris...I think he survives on frozen pizzas.

That would be Chris
